At Home… A Suburb Snapshot

By George Hadgelias

The inner-city suburb of Paddington is three kilometres west of the CBD and borders the suburbs of Milton and Red Hill. Its proximity to the CBD has been a major driver of its growth, as too have the redevelopment of Suncorp Stadium and the creation of various village precincts, such as Rosalie Village. These factors have made the suburb very popular with young families and professionals alike. Given Terrace, Latrobe Terrace and Rosalie Village provide the main shopping, eating and commercial strips in Paddington — these areas provide an array of some of Brisbane’s best cafes, restaurants and fashion boutiques. Supermarkets are located on Latrobe Tce and slightly further north in Ashgrove. There are various educational facilities in the suburb including Petrie Terrace State School and Ithaca Creek State School. Until 2008 the suburb was also home to Marist College Rosalie, but the school has since closed. Property in Paddington is dominated by renovated workers cottages and Queenslanders, which give the suburb a distinctive Brisbane feel and truly characterise the area as a historic Queensland location. Due to its proximity to Mt Coot-tha, Paddington is a very hilly suburb with many peaks and gullies. Many of the homes located on the crests of hills have been renovated to take advantage of the spectacular panoramic views of Brisbane’s skyline, while older homes have been built on stumps because of the steep nature of the blocks. A number of restrictions exist on established and new buildings in the area, helping to maintain Paddington’s special character. Source: REIQ
