Top Tips For Moving Home This Autumn

By George Hadgelias

Autumn may be the ideal time to move. Not too hot, not too cold — it’s just right! Having said that, there are some unique conditions to consider.

Make your upcoming move a breeze by reading through some top tips for an autumnal move.

Check the weather

Moving on a rainy day sucks. It sucks a lot more if you were expecting it to be sunny.

Planning and preparation goes a long way to completing a successful move. If there’s rain on the horizon, you’ll need to consider protective plastic sheets and tarps to keep things dry, rain coats, non-slip shoes and so on.

Even if it’s not raining, you may still need a solution to prevent dragging dirt, mud or leaf litter through your new home.

“We used drop sheets all through the house,” NSW Southern Highlands resident Emily shared of her moving experience. “They’re cheap from Bunnings, so you can really use as many as you like. With all the rain we’ve had this year, I imagine they’ll come in handy for a lot of people!”

Negotiate better deals

The property market tends to see more action in spring and summer, meaning autumn and winter are a little slower for associated industries. Therefore, when it comes to rental and moving costs, you may find yourself with a bit of bargaining power.

Removalist aggregator and comparison site Muval.com.au finds autumn to be one of the most affordable times of year to move.

“Autumn has the lowest percentage of enquiries for moving house versus any other season,” Muval Chief Commercial Officer Adam Coward shares. “This means we see higher availability and lower demand, which typically means removalists will drop prices to stay competitive and help keep their trucks and teams moving.”

Adam confirmed April and May are typically the most affordable months, but it never hurts to compare the costs to make things easier.

Plan ahead for your utilities

You don’t want to be without electricity and internet on your first night. Make sure you’ve planned for the connection of your utilities ahead of moving day.

While connecting energy may be simple — you can simply book a connection or re-connection online — a bit of extra research may be required for internet.

Check in advance what types of internet options are available at your new home (NBN, 5G, etc.) by plugging the address into an online internet availability search. You should also check for added fees and potential connection hurdles so you can plan your move and budget. Optus, for instance, offers NBN and 5G home internet plans with no start-up fee, making your move easier and more affordable.

Think seasonally when packing

Determining how to pack for the right season will be easier in some climates than others. In autumn, some parts of the nation are still enjoying the final throes of summer, while other parts are rapidly cooling down.

If you live an area with more pronounced seasons, you can start to separate and pack non-essential items earlier. For example, this could include summer clothes, outdoor furniture, toys (such as pool or beach toys), some types of linen and bedding.

You’ll want to keep the seasons in mind for unpacking and moving too. This means keeping blankets or heaters easily accessible should the weather become cool at night and dress in layers on moving day to ensure you’re prepared for any weather.

Maximise daylight hours

Daylight savings ends in autumn, so if you’re moving after 3 April, consider you may not have as much time in the day as you think.

It’s best to start your move bright and early. This not only ensures you have all the daylight hours you need, but also means you generally avoid the hustle and bustle.
